Fright Filled Strug S’mores

“The menacing cave stood in front of them, dripping with strug. The trees that surrounded them were becoming no more than ghostly shadows.”

You bake?

I’m a bit shocked myself. I haven’t always loved baking – and don’t get me started on cooking, but over the last few years, I have really enjoyed creating through baking. Over the years, I have watched bakers turn boring deserts into amazing art pieces. The artistic element has really made me gape in wonderment. I decided to take a stab at creating food inspired by my works of fiction.

What is strug?

Like a child he would, he would have usually been fascinated by the luminous shades of purple that dripped down into giant raindrops. Luckily, his inner child was a lot more cautious at the moment.”

Strug is made from magical properties. It is sticky and has a lavender hue that glows. It will kill you. A slow painful death at that. If you want to read more about strug or the magical creatures that create it, please feel free to check out book one.

Fetch me my whisk!

I decided to try to create a fancy version of s’mores. Let’s say it wasn’t really all that fancy, BUT it was tasty! Since I am still learning how to bake without a recipe, I used two recipes for these. Who doesn’t love a good marshmallow? To create the marshmallow’s, I used this recipe. Click on the recipe to get all the delightful steps! It was actually really easy to make these. The color part was quite fun! To create strug colored marshmallows, I put in a little bit of food coloring at a time. Then surprise! I got a fun purple/lavender color! Keep adding color until you get the color you want.

Ingredients:

  • 2 packets or 1 1/2 tbs gelatin powder
  • 1 cup water, divided
  • 2 cups Sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • Red & blue food coloring

You have to let the marshmallows set for a few hours, and I swear they taste so good! This recipe doesn’t use corn syrup either! You can melt the marshmallows like store-bought ones, but they will melt faster, and I would recommend cutting them in smaller sizes for them to fit well onto the cookie. normal Perfect strug snack for any Eltrist! Also, I swear I didn’t plan on my son wearing his camping pajama shirt for this, but it is so perfect!

Ditch the graham crackers!

Gingerbread cookies are all the rage still, right? If you happen to make this outside of winter and someone gives you a hard time, just tell them that you will fetch an Eltrist after them. That will teach them! I got it in my head to make a mini version of s’mores because I have a small family and didn’t want to make too many. But who knows. I found this super cute acorn cookie cutter in a local shop, but I didn’t think to buy more than one. Ha! Don’t be like me. Get another cookie cutter! Normal-sized cookie cutters work great too. Since this was inspired by Ben’s character, I wanted to make sure I used one that was camping or nature-based.

You can find mini cookie cutters in stores like Joanns, Michaels, or online. Here’s a nature set that I found on amazon. I found this camping set on Joann’s website – super cute!

I used this recipe for mini gingerbread cookies. The recipe can be used for regular cookie cutters as well. Find the whole recipe here.

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 c. brown sugar
  • generous 1/3 c. molasses
  • 2 tsp. ground ginger
  • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. ground cloves
  • 2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 c. unsalted butter, cut into chunks
  • 1 egg
  • 2 ½ to 3 c. all-purpose flour

Making the cookies were surprisingly easy. I was surprised, however, when my mixture turned to what you see in the above second picture. It gets super foamy, almost like spray foam. You have to let the dough rest for about an hour in the fridge, and then it’s time to use those cookie cutters and bake! The cookies came out pretty well. I think making them thinner and adding in more ginger or cinnamon would have helped the taste to be more prominent. *When you are rolling out the dough, you can also add in sprinkles. If I had lavender or purple ones on hand, I would have added them before baking.

Devourement!

Now after all that waiting and baking, it’s finally time to assemble your Fright Filled Strug S’mores! I got some white chocolate (any chocolate you love will work). Add some to your cookie, and then roast a marshmallow or two. Then top it off with another cookie just like you would with any s’more.
